STEAM Field Trip for Class 225

"What is computer hardware? What is software?"

These are some of the questions Class 225 were exploring before the winter break.

To answer these questions, Class 225 students went to visit the Technology Office for their first STEAM field trip! Equipped with their iPads, questions and curiosity, our youngest students were greeted by the Technology Director, Tim Mckeon, and his team.

From exploring the inside of an old Apple Macintosh 512k computer desktop to seeing a drone, Class 225 were amazed by all the hardware that surrounded them! They have learned that the software they use on their iPads, are designed by computer programmers and are now learning how to code!

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

Arab American Heritage Month

Arab American Heritage Month officially occurs during the month of April, but the Middle School observed it this year during December. Students learned about the origins of the month and the people it celebrates, focusing on specific Arab Americans in popular culture, such as Steve Jobs and Kathy Najimy. The Middle School was also visited by a guest speaker, Khalid El Khatib, a Palestinian American who has written articles about his Arab heritage. He spoke to students about his experience growing up in Iowa as an Arab American and member of the LGBTQ+ community. The Middle School continued to honor and celebrate Arab culture for the remainder of December.

Muttigrees Ambassadors

In December, our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Muttigrees Ambassadors took a virtual tour of North Shore Animal League. Our ambassadors asked insightful questions, as we learned about the process of rescuing animals. This informative tour provided additional motivation for our ambassadors in their raising awareness and fundraising campaigns.

Prior to break, our 7th grade Ambassadors held their fundraising sale and raffle. Thanks to our supportive community, they raised $84 to be split between Silver Dog and NSAL rescues! Our 8th grade bracelet sale was postponed due to the school closure and will be rescheduled as soon as possible. 6th grade ambassadors have been working hard on their fundraising and awareness campaigns. More info to come...

Service Learning & The Liberation Library

On December 16th, about 60 students created and decorated bookmarks which were sent to Liberation Library. This nonprofit organization sends books along with a handmade bookmark to incarcerated youth. They believe that books and relationships empower young people to change the criminal legal system.

HS Theatre Field Trip

Before Winter Break, the High School cast of The Wolves went to see Trevor the Musical off-Broadway! Students got to commiserate with the cast afterwards and had a great night out together.

Thanks to Joyce, Mr. Isaacs, Ms. Ortiz, and Mr. Wallin for supporting our trip!
